October 23, 2009 - Coca-Cola Explosion

We made a regular Coke and a diet coke explode by putting one mento in each bottle. The diet coke exploded more. - Drew

We watched a Mythbusters video. It was about how to do the experiment. - Ford

We saw the craters on the mentos by looking in a microscope. - Britta

The craters on the mento realized carbon dioxide bubbles that came out of the top of the bottle. - David

We learned what was happening - carbon dioxide bubble nucleation. - Noah

Each of us got to eat a mento; it was really good. - Natania

We got to drink the Coke after the experiment was done. - Charlie

We heard Ms. Searcy play the piano. - Erin

October 2, 2009 ~ Kitchen Chemistry

We made spaghetti dance. – Charlie

We poured baking soda in water and stirred it up. We put the vermicelli in the water. Then we added vinegar. It took a minute and the vermicelli started rising and when they got to the top the bubbles popped and it went back down. – Ford

The bubbles of carbon dioxide went on the vermicelli and it started to carry it to the top. The bubbles popped at the top and the vermicelli went back down. – Noah

We made a rubber egg and bounced it. When it got about a foot off the ground, it popped when we dropped it. – Josh

Last Friday, we put vinegar in a cup and then we put raw eggs in it. Today it felt like rubber. – Hunter

The egg shell dissolved. – Ford

We checked on our egg we put in a plastic bag last week – rotten egg. It stunk! - Natania

The rubber egg grew very big. – Emma

We made a stomach and mixed juice with crackers to squish it up. – David

We made s’mores. We were trying to make it by the sun, but it wasn’t sunny so we had to make them in the microwave. – Christian

With the s’mores, I made a tiny cake out of the marshmallows and the chocolate chips because I didn’t really like the crackers. – Bailey

FROM THE PLATE TO THE TUMMY (Creative Writing - Personification)

Hello. I am a pickle. I was once in a bowl. I saw a big hand pick me up. Then I saw I was in a dark, scary place. I was so big. I did get chewed. I saw a big gate open. The next things I knew I was on a very dark slide. I went past a lot of small bumps. Then I saw that I was dissolving in a pool of orange stuff. Britta

I was a piece of a hot dog when something picked me up. It looked like a tractor but taller. It put me in something like a cave. It had lots of pink bumps. I guess those were rocks but pin. Something started to squeeze me. It kind of hurt. Then I went down a slide. It was fun. Things were pushing me so hard like the thing that squeezed me. Then I went in a lake with brown water. It was big. Then, I went through a tube. First, a small tube then a big tube. It was a fun journey. Christian

I'm a hot dog. I see a big giant door, and something that was forcing me down. When I first got in, I saw a a thing that was shaped and had little, little dots and little hairs. Then I went through a slide thing that was very, very slippery. Then suddenly, I got sucked into a big thing that was called the Hole of Doom. The End. Hunter

I am a pickle. Oh no, a giant hand came and picked me up and chewed me. Then I saw these red bumpy, hairy things on a giant red slimy thick thing. Then I went down a slimy tube with a gate that keeps on opening and closing. Something kept punching me down the tube and a big and round thing showed up. When I got into the big, round thing, I died because of this stingy stuff. Bailey

Today my bacon family and me were eaten. We got chewed and pushed and moved and when we got to the epiglottis a popcorn ball was right behind us. We all screamed and ran right through the epiglottis door. Then two seconds later, we were at the stomach. Then we looked down and we noticed that we were getting sucked up by green goo. Hi. I am a blue M&M. I love to sit in big plates to relax. Well, right now, I am! By the way, my name is Ahhhhhhhh......! What is that thing!! That was a mouth. It was chewing me so hard. That hurts! It swallowed me. I saw some weird thing but what were those things. I saw red squishy stuff. All of a sudden something pushed me down, down . . . . . I fell into something really squishy, even squishier than the other. It was the stomach! Now that was scary! The stomach squished me up. That was the end of me. Kelly

I am a cupcake. Ahh. Somebody is eating me. Teeth - ahhh ahhh ! Where am I? I am in a piece of paper. I'm floating. Slimy walls, so it definitely is not in paper. I'm floating away from he teeth. Teeth!!!! I must be in someones body. Well what part of the body am I in? I wonder. Ahh. A gate. It looks like the teeth. It is sucking me in. I tried swimming. Struggling was no use. It pulled me down in two seconds. I was shoved and pushed down it and fell in a pit. There was acid. i melted. The end. Emma

I was just a little crumb on the floor when a huge dog came and gobbled me up. First, I went on a gross, stinky thing. Then I went down a very sticky pipe. Then there was a gate that let me through. It was opening and closing. Then I went inside a weird thing. It was round, a little bit. All of a sudden this kind of acid came and burned my skin. I'm dead. The dog swallowed me. The End. Josh

Once I saw a hand. Aha. Wow. Now I'm playing step, dance, step. Now I'm sliding down a yucky tube. Oh, a door - it opened! Cool germs, let's boogie in that liquid. Ahh! I'm burning. I will just head down that hole. Charlie

Hi. I am a pickle named Pickey. I was named after my grandfather. One day I was lying in my jar. All of a sudden, I was taken and a big thing picked me up. Then I was eaten, I believe. on the way, I saw big white things, and you know what they did? They comped me into twenty pieces. Then I went down a big tube and there was a big thing that opened and then closed. Now, I'm lying around all alone. That was a very scary journey. The End. Erin

I am a marshmallow. Someone picked me up and sucked on me. Then they took a big bite. Chomp! I slid down a slimy pink thing. It was fun. i sat at the bottom for a little while. It felt kinda weird to sit in a slimy pink thing. I got pretty warm. So I cuddled up and went to sleep. The End. Leann

Facts about digestion:

You can feel your trachea moving when you swallow by putting your hand on your Adam’s apple. You can’t swallow and breathe at the same time.

Even if you’re upside down, your food will still go down your esophagus because of peristalsis. Muscles close down on the food and push it down. Astronauts can swallow and food goes down the esophagus even though they are upside down. The lining of the esophagus is covered with slippery mucus.

How long does it take the food to travel from the mouth to the stomach? Seven seconds.

In the stomach, there are two types of digestion. Chemical digestion uses enzymes. Enzymes can turn bread into sugar. Sugar is easy to digest. There is a layer made of mucus that protects your stomach from the enzyme chemicals. Physical digestion happens when the stomach is churning. The muscles of the stomach are massaging your food.

Today was our first day in 2nd grade TAG.




Here are some things we learned today.

There are four types of taste buds. - Josh

There are little hairs under your taste buds that go to your brain to tell it what the taste is. - Ford

The hairs are called microvilli. - Britta

There are olfactory glands in your nose. - Erin

The taste buds are not the bumps on your tongue. Those bumps are called papillae. Underneath those bumps are taste buds. - Hunter

Taste buds taste bitter, sour, sweet and salty. - Noah

If you close your nose, the olfactory glands aren't strong enough to smell. - Emma

If you close your nose, you can't taste anything. - Bailey

Your tongue helps you talk. - Charlie
